Evaluation Inclement Weather Plan

Upward Parents:
In case of inclement weather for Saturday or Monday's evaluations, we have reserved the church facilities and will move indoors, if needed. If we have to move indoors, we may have to scale a few things back, but we will proceed as planned.

Details on Upward Evaluations

Good morning!
Just wanted to pass on some details for Upward Evaluations . . . since we are now days away!

Evaluations will take place at NRBC in the grassy area near our recreation fields on Sat., February 4 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and on Mon., February 6 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Please stay tuned to this blog for weather related cancellations/re-scheduling. If we have to cancel due to inclement weather, it will be posted by one hour prior to the start time of the Evaluation.

Cheerleaders/Football players need to attend only one of the evaluations and plan to be here about 20-30 minutes, depending on lines. Football players will need to wear comfortable, athletic clothes/shoes as they will be doing 6 evaluation stations in skills such as speed, throwing the football, etc. We do these drills to help us try to create even teams so one team does not dominate in one division throughout the entire season.

As far as cheerleading, we do not "evaluate" their skills, we simply have 3 stations that will begin to build their cheerleading skills foundation and get them excited for the season.

Throughout the evaluation/orientation for both sports, you will also be meeting a lot of our coaches for the upcoming season ... feel free to talk to them and get to know them better! They are all excited about coaching your children this season.

We will be accepting new registrations through our last evaluation on Mon., February 6.

At the evaluations, you will receive important league schedules/calendars and information for the upcoming season. Your child will also have the opportunity to enter to win door prizes!

Update: First week of Upward Practices moved back!

I apologize for a change in the schedule, but we are moving the first week of practices back one week – to the week of February 20 (instead of the 13). This still gives Coaches two practices with their teams, which is our usual # of allotted practices before a game. The Coaches Training, EVALS, and the first game will all stay the same. This just gives Coaches an extra week to prepare and contact players and us a few extra days to get rosters and schedules done.

If you register your children by December 20, children will be entered into a drawing to win either – (football player) football and mouth-guard OR (cheerleader) pom-poms and a design-your-own megaphone! We will also take $5 off the registration fee if you register by December 20.

CPR/First Aid Class Sign-ups

We are hosting an Adult/Child/Infant CPR and First Aid Class on Sat., January 28 in the NRBC Fellowship Hall beginning at 10:00 AM. The class is led by the American Heart Association and is $50 (pay the day of the class). The certification is good for two years.

Dear Parents:
As you have heard, Nansemond River’s Fall Family Festival is this Sat. from noon to 4:00 p.m. There will be a lot of activity around the church as members arrive to set up and vendors arrive with blow ups, rock wall, etc. In an effort to keep a path open and space available as vendors arrive, the church has received permission to use the parking lot at the Lutheran Church on the other side of the recreation fields for UPWARD families and volunteers . If you are able to park there and walk around, we appreciate your efforts. However, if you choose to park in the church parking lot, please be cautious of additional traffic and be aware that you need to move your vehicle after games or if needed to allow vendors, fire trucks, etc. to gain access. We hope your family will join us for an afternoon of fun and fellowship at the Fall Festival from noon to 4:00 p.m. with an antique car show, games and activities for all ages, clowns, food, funnel cakes and more! Everything is free and is usually a great afternoon of family fun!

Parent Update & Announcements: Upward Fall Soccer

Upward Parents:
I just wanted to say how excited all of the Commissioners, Coaches and Referees are for our opening game day this Sat., September 24th. Just a few reminders as we enter into our first week of games …

Game Day Field Rules:
• Please no dogs (or pets) on the Recreation fields as we continue to promote the safety of all children and families in our League. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we really want to protect all involved in the League.

• Please park in the gravel parking lot and not in the grassy area. Again, this is solely for the protection of all children and families – we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

*Please visit the Concessions Stand this Saturday – we will have snacks, fresh coffee, (sports drinks/water/soda) drinks and Upward apparel that can be purchased.

*We have port-a-pots and a hand-washing station near our Recreation fields, so please utilize them, if needed!

Due to an overwhelming amount of numbers in our 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th grade divisions, we are updating our divisions to the following for the upcoming season:

Game Day Official Soccer Ball Sizes:
Size 3: K4/K5 (all kids received a size 4 soccer ball at Soccer Camp ... they can still bring these to practices - you do not have to purchase the official size, but know they will be the game day sizes)
Size 4: 1st-4th graders
Size 5: 5th-8th graders

Monday/Tuesday Upward Evaluations

Dear Upward Families:
We pray that everyone is doing well and recovering from the storm. While there are several trees down at NRBC and currently the power still out in our offices, we are still planning to proceed with Evaluations Monday and Tuesday from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Kids can wear tennis shoes or cleats for the drills. Please allow up to 30 minutes for Evaluations, with our Saturday Evaluation being cancelled and the effects of the storm, we are unaware of the traffic flow.

Dear Parents,

We are post-poning tomorrow’s Upward Evaluations because of the impending weather and unsafe environment for families and children. We will now hold Evaluations on Mon., August 29 and Tues., August 30 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the grassy area near the Recreation Fields. Please pass the word to any families who you know were planning on coming out!

If you aren’t able to make it to either Monday/Tuesday’s evaluation, please contact me via phone or email so we can work out logistics!

Just an update - we are currently still planning to proceed with Saturday's Evaluation. In the event of rain on Saturday morning, we will cancel and post-pone the Evaluation, but as of now, it's still a go.

Upward Cleat & Shin Guard Exchange

Join the Upward Cleat & Shin Guard Exchange! It’s easy! Put a pair of gently used soccer cleats or shin guards in the box provided at Evaluations (Sat., August 27 from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. and Mon., August 29 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.). You can take a pair that will fit your child this season! You do not have to put a pair in to take a pair out.

Plastic bags and Lysol spray will be provided. Please spray used cleats/ guards, place in bag, and put in the box.

Cleat and Guard exchange box will also be available near the main entrance of the NRBC Offices through the first week of practices.

Upward Soccer Camp - Mon., July 25 - Thurs., July 28 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Upward Soccer Camp focuses on fundamentals, equipping children with the athletic skills needed to pariticpate in a future league and at the next level (it just so happens our Fall Soccer League kicks off a month after the Camp).

Participants receive a t-shirt, poster, water bottle and a soccer ball!

Early registration ends July 4 ($40) and late registration ends July 15 ($50). Scholarships are available.

Fall Soccer Sneak Peak!

Our Fall Soccer Season will be here before you know it ... we will have renovated fields and lots of exciting, fun changes to our League. Brochures are in and we are NOW accepting registrants - boys and girls, grades K4 - 8th grade. We wanted to give you a "sneak peak" because we are very excited about the Fall Soccer jerseys and items for the upcoming season! Check them out ... with the fee that you pay, you receive the following:

Jersey

These two-ply reversible mesh jerseys look great on the field. For the first time, individual numbers will be on the back. One side is blue and the reverse side is green.

Shorts

Mesh, non-reversible game shorts that match the jerseys. These shorts are optional are can be purchased seperately for $10.

Socks

Quality soccer socks designed to fit over shin guards.

Water Bottle

The water bottle is great for practices and games. This water bottle comes with a protective sleeve that can be removed for washing.

Car Magnet

These magnets are to be displayed on each family's vehicle to show support for their participation in Upward Soccer.

End-of-Season Award & Big Story DVD

This is a special gift that each player will receive at the awards celebration. This award is kept secret until the celebration.

Can you believe we are in our last week of the 2011 Spring Upward Flag Football and Cheerleading season? I pray that you have enjoyed this season and that your child has grown athletically and spiritually. I’m really looking forward to this weekend’s league festivities and wanted to make you aware of a few details regarding the events …

Last Game Day: This Saturday, April 16. There will be a petting zoo during the games for all the kids to enjoy. We will also have sno-cones for sale at Concessions for only $.50. Please note, we are changing the time for “Kiss-the-Cow” to 10:00 a.m. so all can see who the winner is! We will gather near the Concessions Stand following the first game. Votes will be accepted for Kiss-the-Cow until 9:45 a.m. New Kiss-the-Cow standings are below … It’s not too late to vote for your child’s Coach.

Just a reminder that in case of inclement weather on Upward game days, if we need to cancel (or re-schedule to another Saturday), we ask that Parents check any of the following to see if games are, in fact cancelled:

Please check the NRBC website (www.nansemondriver.com, click on the sports & recreation page, then the Upward sports page) by 8:00 – 8:15 a.m. and there will be a message stating games are cancelled due to inclement weather.
Please check the NRBC blog (www.nrbcsportsandrec.blogspot.com) by 8:00 – 8:15 a.m. and there will be a recent post at the top of the page stating games are cancelled.
You should receive notification from your Coach as well, but please check the website/blog for accurate cancellations.

Where Every Child is a Winner!

Upward is a very unique experience. Our motto is, “Where every child is a winner!” What does this mean? Does it mean they will win every game? I wish we could guarantee that, but we can’t. Unfortunately, one team will win and one team will lose (or they will tie which is always fun to watch!).

When we say “where every child is a winner,” we promote winning as how they played the game, not whether or not they lost. We encourage kids not to live and breathe by what the scoreboard says, but - if they had fun, if they cheered for their team-mates, and if they did their absolute best! Thus, we implement the star system, so they are encouraged no matter how the game ends on the scoreboard. We love to watch as their skills improve from the beginning to the end of the season. We cannot always guard children from winning or losing a game, but we can promote what’s most important and that’s what we aim to do.

We do try and create even teams by conducting evaluations, but children always play differently in a “game-scenario”. If they are new to Football, it may take a few weeks to understand how the game is played.

I’ve always been inspired by this quote, “It’s what you get from games you lose that is extremely important.” Therefore, we can’t always win every single game, but we can encourage children to do their very best, have fun, cheer for the team-mates and learn to be more like Christ, both on and off the fields. Let’s encourage each and every player out on these fields and show them the “winner” inside of them ...

SAVE THE DATE: Please save the date for our Upward Awards Celebration, which will be held on Sun., April 17 at 4:30 p.m. Also, please plan to stay for the “Kiss-the-Cow” at 11:00 a.m. on the last game day – Sat., April 16.
Concessions Snack/Drink Tickets: Upward Concessions is now selling tickets for Parents or Coaches to purchase for a $1 ticket per child to come up to receive one snack and drink per child. If a parent forgets to bring snack or if it’s the Coaches turn to bring snacks and drinks, this could help tremendously! Just purchase tickets at the Concessions stand to hand each child on your team. For example, purchase 12 tickets for $12 and each child receives one snack and one drink. (Idea from an Upward Parent!)

Please be advised of our Safety Rules for the NRBC Sports & Recreation Fields. Thank you for joining us in our effort to promote safety on our fields.

Dogs: Due to the increased growth of our League, the Staff and Upward Commissioners feel that dogs should no longer be permitted on the fields due to the risk of accidental harm to children, parents or any other participant of Upward Sports at Nansemond River Baptist Church. Thank you for supporting our attempts to promote safety.

Playground: We would like all Upward Parents to be aware that the new playground next door (directly beside our Recreation Fields) is not Nansemond River’s property (it’s Faith Lutheran’s). We do ask that children remain off the playground for the safety of each child and due to liability issues.

Inclement Weather Policy

In the event of inclement weather, please plan to attend practice unless you are contacted by your Coach. Football teams will practice outside in light rain as long if there is no lighting. Football teams may also be able to practice inside if the church facilities are available. On game days, you may check for cancellations on the NRBC website - http://www.nansemondriver.org/ and this blog - http://www.nrbcsportsandrec.blogspot.com/.
On game days, NRBC Upward Commissioners will make cancellation decisions by 8:00 a.m. on Saturday mornings. For practice days, cancellation decisions are to be made by your Coach.

Evaluations Update!

Upward 2011 Spring Football Evaluations and Cheerleading Orientation is quickly approaching! You can attend either Evaluation/Orientation:
#1: Sat., January 29 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (NRBC Recreation Fields)
#2: Mon., January 31 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. (NRBC Fellowship Hall & Outside ... Registration for all players and Cheerleading Stations will meet in the Fellowship Hall, then Football Players will go outside for their Skills Stations.)

You need to attend only 1 Evaluation and can come anytime during the allotted time frame. We do, however, suggest that you plan for about 30-minutes (more or less depending on the crowd) to go through registration and the stations.

At Evaluations, you will receive you league information for the upcoming season, go through Football Evaluation or Cheer Orientation stations as well as try on sample jerseys. It's our "official" kick-off of the season.

You can register additional players @ Evaluations. The deadline for registration is Mon., January 31.

Players should hear from their Coaches by Thurs., February 3. We are still in need of several Flag Football Coaches (2 K4/K5 Coaches and 2 1-3 Grade Coaches). If you are interested, please call or email Lizzy Christian at: (757) 484-3423 or lchristian@nansemondriver.org.

If you are interested in a two-year CPR/First Aid Certification Class, we are holding one at the church on Sat., January 15, 2011 beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The CPR/First Aid Class is sponsored by the American Heart Association including infant, child and adult CPR. The class is $50 and need to be paid the day of the class via check or cash. The certification is good for two years.

Upward Missions Project: Sports Shoes & Socks for Uruguay

NRBC Upward Sports will be doing a mission project from Sat., October 2 - Sat., November 6. We are collecting sports shoes & socks for Uruguay. We need inexpensive, new sports shoes and warm socks for impoverished children. This will open many doors for workers to share the Gospel and plant churches. The shoes can be any kind of sports shoes - soccer, tennis, basketball, etc. in children & youth sizes.

You can help reach 1.4 million people who live in the targeted area - Monetevideo, which is the most secular metropolitan area of South America.

There will be a collection box on the Upward Game Fields (near concessions) beginning Sat., October 2.

We are so excited that the official "kick-off" of our Upward Soccer Season is this Sat., August 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and on Mon., August 28 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. next Monday. You can come anytime on either day (you only need to attend one Evaluation). Incase of inclement weather, PLEASE CHECK THIS BLOG FOR UPDATES!

Can you believe the start to a new soccer season is just weeks away? We are so excited as we prepare to get to know your children and teach them the fundamentals of soccer as well as teaching them Bible Verses and Biblical Truths through various drills and devotions throughout the season.

Here is our 2010 Fall Soccer League Calendar:

Evaluations: Sat., August 28 (9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) and Mon., August 30 (5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.)

First Practice: Week of September 6

First Game - Opening Day: Sat., September 26

League Picture Day: (TIMES-TBA) Sat., October 16

Awards Celebration/Closing Ceremonies: Sun., November 15 at 4:30 p.m.

Soccer Camp - one week away!

Can you believe Soccer Camp is only one week away? We are so excited about the soccer skills and Biblical truths your children will be taught during the week of Camp.

If you have signed your child(ren) up for the camp, here are a few reminders:

The Camp runs from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on the NRBC Recreation Fields.
In case of inclement weather, we will move the camp indoors.
It's not mandatory that your child wears soccer cleats, but we highly recommend it.
Your child does NOT need to bring a Soccer ball, they will receive one on the first night of camp.
Please send a water bottle to camp with your child with their name on it.

Just an update - Fall Soccer dates have been confirmed, please mark your calendars:

Evaluations: Sat., August 28 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and on Mon., August 30 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

First Practice: the week of Mon., September 6
(Monday practices on the 6th will be moved to another night due to Labor Day).

First Game: Sat., September 25

Last Game: Sat., November 13

Awards Celebration: Sun., November 14 at 4:30 p.m.

**Fall Soccer Registration Brochures will be available beginning July 10th.**

Kiss The Pig Fundraiser Update!

Lizzy McClelland, NRBC Director of Sports & Recreation "wins" the opportunity to kiss Wilbur.

The continued growth of our sports ministry has made it necessary to cosider major improvements to our fields, including grading, seeding and irrigation.

Our "Kiss the Pig" fundraiser helped us to raise approximately $5,200 towards the $60,000 projected costs for our field improvements.

Thanks to everyone who supported our fundraiser with your financial donations and support!

NRBC's Upward Soccer Camp plans are underway! The date is set for July 26-29, 2010 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on the NRBC Recreation Fields for K4 - 8th Grade. We have added the 7th-8th grade divisions as a "test" to see if we have enough interest to add the new division to our Fall Soccer League. Brochures are now available at the office of Nansemond River Baptist Church between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Kiss-the-Pig, Fund the Field!

Pay $1 per vote to nominate your favorite coach, pastor, referee, or commissioner. The one with the most votes "wins" the opportunity to "Kiss the Pig" at the UPWARD Awards Celebration on Sunday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the NRBC Recreation Fields.

All proceeds go toward improvements to our recreation fields. Due to the continued growth of our sports ministry there is a need to make major improvements to our fields, including grading, seeding and irrigation.

The projected cost for these improvements are around $60, 000.

Your contribution to "Kiss the Pig, Fund the Field" will help us with these improvements!
